You will need a National Insurance Number in order to open an ISA (except if you are one of the persons described below). If you do not have a National Insurance Number and you do not fit into a category listed below you should apply for one before making an application to open an ISA.

If you have a National Insurance Number but don’t know what it is you can usually find it on a pay slip, P60 or P45 tax form notice of tax coding, unemployment benefit book or pension books.

The following people may not have and are not required to have a National Insurance Number. They are still eligible to open an ISA.

  • a man born before 1912
  • a woman born before 1914
  • a married woman who has not paid national insurance contributions since 1975
  • a person who was abroad before 1975 and who has not paid national contributions since
  • a person born after 1963 in respect of whom child benefit was not paid immediately before his or her 16th birthday and who has not paid national insurance contributions since.
