Why do the prices of my investments go up and my portfolio profit stays the same?

The value of the investments in your portfolio is usually based on the bid price. (See the "Which price does Interactive Investor use for the portfolio valuation and profit calculation?") The bid price is the price you will get if you decide to sell (assuming the number of shares sold is within normal market size).

The change in price is usually calculated as the difference between the mid price and the previous close (a volume weighted mid).

Often, the ask will move higher and along with it the mid price (average of bid and ask) but the bid will remain the same.
