2009/10 Changes

The ISA limits for 2009/10 are age related.

On 6th October 2009 the ISA limit for those aged 50 and over will rise to £10,200 (subject to a maximum of £5,100 in Cash).

From 6th April 2010 the ISA limit will increase for all to the new limit of £10,200 (£5,100 Cash limit)

2008/09 Changes

Changes to your ISA & PEP

HM Treasury announced amendments to the ISA Regulations which took effect on April 6th 2008. We have listed below details of the changes:

ISAs are available indefinitely
Previously the Government had set an end date to ISAs of 2010. This end date has now been removed and ISAs are available indefinitely.

Mini/Maxi Distinction have been removed
From April 6th 2008 the terms 'Mini' and 'Maxi' no longer exist. Instead there are two ISAs available to you – a Stocks and Shares ISA or a Cash ISA.
So if you previously held a Stocks and Shares ISA (also known as a Self-Select ISA or a Funds ISA), and it is was a Maxi or a Mini, it has simply become a Stocks and Shares ISA.

PEPs moving into the ISA Wrapper
From April 6th 2008, PEPs ceased to exist and have been renamed a Stocks and Shares ISA. They are subject to ISA rules. This means that you are now able to subscribe new cash to it, subject to the overall annual subscription allowance. Your investments will continue to benefit from the tax advantages provided by an ISA.

Increase to Annual Allowance
You now have an available ISA allowance of £7,200.00 per tax year. Of this total, up to £3,600.00 per tax year can go into a Cash ISA and the balance into a Stocks and Shares ISA. Alternatively you can invest the full £7200.00 into a Stocks and Shares ISA.

Flexibility of your Annual Allowance
Your annual allowance is also more flexible. The overall annual limit is £7,200.00, but you can divide this up as you choose - subject to an overall limit of £7,200 and a Cash ISA limit of £3,600.

For Example:
Cash ISA £3,600 + Stocks and Shares ISA £3,600
Cash ISA £2,000 + Stocks and Shares ISA £5,200
Cash ISA £0        + Stocks and Shares ISA £7,200

Cash ISAs can be transferred into Stocks and Shares ISA

You are now able to transfer cash from your Cash ISA into a Stocks & Shares ISA.
(Please note that the rules will not allow you to transfer the other way - from a Stocks & Shares ISA to a Cash ISA)
